What is the trick on keeping shell growth off of props and shaft?. Hull gets no build up but brass sure does.

Paint it

I usually paint my shaft and prop with bottom paint. Ive tried it both ways and have had better luck with painting. Just be sure that you don't put paint on the ends of the cutless bearing or stuffing box. Water need to get into both places for lubrication.

Painting Prop

There was an article in Sail or Cruising World this summer on a complicated but effective way of painting the prop so that the paint would stay on. I don't paint it. I go overboard with mask and fins on Labor Day and scrape it which works until our last weekend in November.

Scraping By

Hi Jack I must admit I go in water once a month,To wipe slime off hull and scrape prop and shaft.FWIW I've heard That if prop is cleaned down to shiny metal and then soaked in "Motor Honey", ( or like product) This will keep prop clean for a season. Haven't tried it, just thought I'd mention it,in case anyone else has and can comment.

Paint it - redux

I don't know how complicated the magazine article made it, but I simply scrape off anything loose and then paint it with ablative bottom paint. There is usually some left on the prop (with very limited growth) when it's hauled for the season (May - October).

Keep it clean

I have tried painting the prop with Interlux ablative paint, but never could get it to stay on the prop throughout the season. It would come off in pieces and where it came off the barnacles would attach themselves quickly, ending up with an unbalanced prop. Finally gave up painting, now I just keep it clean every three months by going overboard with mask and 3M abrasive cloth like you use to clean pots and pans.

Diaper Rash

Did I read here or somewhere else about using baby botton anti fouling ointment to keep the stuff off of props shafts and inflateable bottoms?

Nothing but a rash

Dear Jack Thanks for the note. The most common material used is paint. The problem with using paint is that it can create galvanic corrosion if the base material of the paint is metal. A way of combating metal to metal contact is place a barrier coat on the propellers surface. This practice can cause oxygen starvation to the metal, which can cause more problems then galvanic corrosion. Home remedies can and do work but the success rate will vary from region to region. We have found desitine, the baby diaper rash ointment, works well in keeping critters off the prop when the propeller is sitting ideal for some period. As soon as the propeller is used though the topical material sluff’s off. But the material can be smeered back on in the water. Rumor has it that the zinc oxide in the desitine inhibits biological growth. Desitine is found in almost every grocery store which stocks baby supplies. Hope it works for you. Sincerely Kevin L. Woody
