Shelf over the sink

One of my winter projects on my 1988 C-30 is to build a cabinet above the sink. I will anchor the shelf, on the left side, underneath the cabin roof upon which the teak grab rails are secured. I'm wondering what material is between the coach roof and ceiling at that point. Is it just balsa or is it a more substantial material?

Take a drill to it

You could check by removing the handrail there. If you can't tell by just looking, use a drill to check - just be sure to fill any holes with epoxy. LaDonna

I've also been thinking about putting in a shelf there. Let us know how it works, where you got the shelf or the plans, etc. Anyway, to answer your question: It's just balsa and about 1/2 inch of fiberglass (which is a pretty substantial material). I just installed a new clutch and had to drill through this. No problem--I used a non-electric hand drill and it was through in a jiffy.
