I have a '79 O'day 23. The current winches are ARCO 7's. When I took them apart I noticed that there are not any bearing inside. They turn OK by hand, but I feel that under a load they tend to bind. What might be a good replacement winch, maybe something with bearings.

The winches are fine...
Jack, the boat is a smaller boat, and on many, all most all smaller boats, the winches are not bearinged.
They work great if maintained and lubed correctly. Beware of synthectics in lubing these guys. It may affect the materials. They were made to be lubed with petrol products. Save your money for two-foot-itice.
