I have a Hunter 23 (1984) and recently met with a stump or something that kicked up the rudder (as it should) but shredded the line that holds the rudder down. Someone asked me if it sheared the pin. I don't have one that I know of and wondered if someone can tell me if this years model had a shear pin and if so where I should look as I don't see anything. If not, can one be added? Where should it go and what procedure do you use for creating one?

Not sure about your boat, but we used Delrin rods until We found the self-releasing cleat from Duckworks

Thanks a lot. Never heard of Ductworks but will check it out as it sounds like what I can use instead of drilling and installing a shear pin. My boat may be old enough that they didn't have the shear pins at that time.

I've heard of sailors even using pencils. The Mac rudders were made with the ability to secure them in the down position. If your rudder swings up it probably is too. I put the new clam cleat on the top of my tiller. Easy peazy.

Glad to know they didn't have the pin. Friend may have seen it on a different boat thinking t was a hunter.
