I'm sure that Sundance is scratching her head

by now. Sundance, please try to understand the make up of people that use this forum. One doesn't necessarily have to even own a sailboat to partake in this forum. Some shoot from the hip and others take their time and give a VERY valuable opinion. There are all kinds of folks who respond here, which I'm sure by now you have noticed. With the purchase of your "new" sailboat, please feel free to ask as many questions as you have. We will respond. Some are not worth the time to read , while most others are very informative. This is a open forum and being "open", anyone can stick their "two cents" in. You must be able to distinguish between the BS some throw out and the very correct information others give. Just don't let the turkeys get you down. And PLEASE don't let the petty squabbling get to you either. Boys will be boys. Just take the information you need and apply it to your circumstance. You'll soon be able to distinguish the real from the phonies. I like your new boat. Good luck and should you have any questions about it's upkeep and or maintenance or installing new items, just ask, and most here will give you a well thought out answer, mostly from our experiences. Are you keeping it in a slip? Trailer/cradle? Does she have AC? Doing a refrigerator is not that hard. Easierthan ice. I found a new "old" unit on Ebay for pennies on the dollar. Works like a charm too! So please feel free to ask anything anytime and we'll respond . Enjoy and above all Keep it up, Ctskip PS 1983 Allmand 31 and I LOVE IT. The older the better Get a copy of Good Old Boat, July issue when you can, great info

Seadance that is a fine looking boat. If it were

berthed next to Bietzpadlin it would make Bietzpadlin look shabby. Getting the furniture reupholstered is just normal maintainance. Every now and again the natsayers seem to come out of the woodwork and try to rain on everybody's parade. Enjoy your new boat! ;D

This Old Boat

Hi guys...I take one day off from the computer and look what happens! ;) I am not upset I am grinning from ear to ear, truly. I love everyonne's personailities here and advice and love this forum. It's my floating yacht club that I cherish and I am on here all the time reading at all hours of the night, even if I don't post. I will keep coming around like Nice N Easy and others have requested:) and I was touched too for that. I am sure I will have lots and lots of questions and I know I will get some good, sound advice. When I post a question I want the good and the bad. I have needed you guys to be my extra set of eyes and that you are. I know if I fall, you guys will help me back up without judging me, just a good ole pat on the back, lesson learned you'll give me. I love this Good Old Boat and thats what she is. I think she is solid and has a lot of charm. I touched every inch of her with what knowledge I had. I can't think of anything on her that needs to be replaced except the cushions look like a creamsicle threw up and they need to go, they are shabby. She'll need to be painted soon but we want to enjoy her this summer and work on that in the winter. As of now we are sea trialing her on Sunday. I can't wait for the sea trial. The owner of the boat will be there and I will pick his brain and I will also get a chance to see what will fall apart on her when we do. The one boat in Maderia Beach we looked at, and I'll spare the owner the name of this boat but the travler broke on her mid sale. He also did not want to cut off the engine at anytime until I said no, cut it off right now please. Would not start up right away. When we got there it was already running. The sails he did not even want to hoist up and that was because the sails did not belong to her and were not just "custom made".He was also determined to keep my husband at the Helm and went below several times. I said nope, I needed to move around, found lots of goodies that were broken and falling into the water had nobody noticed. They lied several times. My rule is I catch you in a lie or you try to BS me I will walk away, no hard feelings just still a heavy pocket jingling back to the car. We did go and look at the Cal 31' before I called the broker back on Monday. She was a beautiful boat, very very very clean, very wide. She did not look like a 31 footer. She looked BIGGER. But...I found the area's that Nice N Easy mentioned and with no electronics and the electrical not up to par and the asking price I was assuming too high because he mentioned he had an offer on it and it was a ridiculous offer in his mind and I got the price out of him on it and said hmmm, with that and lots of money had to go into her and something just did not Jive. I caught it and my husband was like you sure did and I don't want to post it to insult the seller of the boat, because he was a nice guy and I think maybe he floats around here and I hope I am not out of line by even saying this much. If I am someone put me in my place. In our contract on this one, rule still applies..we can walk away from it at anytime and get our deposit back(which I just mailed out today). By the way, This owner was really tough to settle on a price. We countered several times. Yeah, my stomache is still in knots until everything is finished and checked out. Up until now we had a good time just exploring. We met a variety of people. With this forum's knowledge and my good instinct to read people and put two and two together very quickly I think I'll be okay for now. Till something breaks! and soon with good luck and good decision buying she will be at Keesler in her cradle and I will be lullying her to sleep...

Seadance, I was stationed at Kessler in the

summer of 1960. That was before hurricanes rearranged the landscape. I have been through there twice since and haven't seen anything that was standing when I was there except the Vet's hospital at Gulfport which they were building then.

Biloxi, Keesler and Hwy 90

Hi Ross! I love every post you have ever put in. I look for okay what did Ross say he had to say something good! Parts of Biloxi and all of Highway 90 still look like a ghost town and nobody is coming back and building is slow. It's sad. We lucked out in the Hurricane because we live in Northwood Hills about 11 miles inland. They refer to our area as tornado alley and we had some tornado's zip thru here but they missed our house and our street. The streets over were not so lucky. The old oak tree's that surround our home were good shelter. We of course went back home for 4 weeks during the Hurricane to Pennsylvania. Hubby lost his job at the Gulfport Grand Casino, it washed away and we were waiting for things to calm down. We were hearing things like people loitering, driving around with shotguns and using them. Availability for anything was bad so we stayed put.The looks on these people's faces were just heartbreaking, everywhere. but anyway! Keesler just rebuilt their Marina and opened up 3 weeks ago and it is just beautiful. When I get down there I will have to take pictures just of that to show you guys. There was a long waiting list of people to get back in but we got bumped up because of a favor my husband did for someone that worked there computer wise. So we lucked out.

I know that the house we rented in Gulfport

was destroyed during Camile's rampage. We last came through there from Baton Rouge about five years ago. Everything has changed in 40 plus years. As far as the cushions are concerned you can always just sew temporary covers from beach towels. Use big stitches and you can pull them and launder them as you see the need.

Seadance, your learning fast

So happy for you, I can feel your excitement in your posts. I think you have already learned that it is a buyers market, at least in our area. And you have figured out that if you catch a seller in a lie, it's probably time to walk. That is a good looking boat, and heres hoping all goes well with the survey and sea trials.

I saw Old Salts' post last night & it made me grin

Now I see that it was removed. ?? I didn't see anything overly harsh. I happen to agree 100% with what he wrote If anything his post was in support of Seadance and people like her and exposing the rantings of some on here that think they know it all. I guess alternative opinions aren't allowed on here and its ok for people like Waffle to post his over the top rants and writing and not have anyone put him in check and expose his errors and lopsided bias's. Sigh. Sad state of affairs Good luck Seadance and take the 'Waffles' of the worl with a grain of salt

I love the name of you boat

When I saw the post with the boat name in it, I grinnec wide. Hope all is well with the transfer of ownership, Seadance. Some friends of our just (as in two months ago) purchased a 30' Hunter, 1980 vintage. They love it. I must aution you, get ready to clean! You'll discover places on your new boat that haven't seen a dust-mop in decades! Seriously, our friends took about a month to get theirs in shape, including bottom job, and then promptly took third place in their forst attempt at racing! The whole club was besides itself with joy for them, except maybe the fourth place finishers who missed placing by under a minute!

SEADANCE

Here a couple of items to look for. Make sure the decks are very firm. Walk around and make sure they don't feel mushy. The surveyor should tap them all out with a wooden hammer. If there is excess deck core rot walk away. Check the deck step (where the mast sits on the deck). Many times water leaks in here too! Make sure the tap out the bilge too! You want to make sure the keel stub is in good shape. Look at the keel bolts too. The are going to be corroded a little, that ok but too too bad. The surveyor will check them. Check out the stuffing box and the engine shaft. Make sure they look ok. Don't forget the have the hull checked for blisters. You have to pay for a short hull. The surveyor will keep a record of everything and give you a nice report before you close. You'll have to work out the price of any repairs with the owner. He doesn't have to fix or pay for anything. If there is a structure problem make sure you understand the worst case for the repair. You might have to pull the keel before you know the extend of a keel stub problem for example. Some here thing I don't have to much experience sailing. I not going to debate them on that. I know how much sailing I have done and for how look. One thing I can tell you, I have purchase a few boats in my day!

Seadance, did you look at the Pearson

She looks real good in the pictures and it is the same price. I see AC vents too. The AC may not work but if the vents and seacock are installed it is a big plus. AC is at least $5000 to install and that is on the cheap side. It is only $2000 to purchase. There are some one sides sailor that would say Pearson is built better than other production boat. I, of course, am not one. I will say this Pearson are know for stronge quality construction. Best to you and your husband, May you always be on a beam reach... 30' Pearson Pearson 30 Year: 1982 Current Price: US$ 15,000 Located in Slidell, LA Hull Material: Fiberglass Engine/Fuel Type: Single Diesel YW# 1613-1392471

Hey Seadance Nice n Easy

Phil, the date has changed from Sunday. The owner will be out of town this weekend and said he would be back on Monday. He asked me what day would be good?...I said Tuesday! If your still available hubby, Pete would love for you to take a look over the boat for him. No pressures. We would probably be there early that day.

Hi Waffle, We did look at this particular Pearson but I don't like the layout where the head is located by the vberth. I just don't like any of the Pearsons layout. She is a pretty boat cosmetically. Thanks for your effort B

Thank you for sharing these pictures. The boat looks beautiful and your gorgeous little guy looks to be my little guys age and looked to be having a lot of fun. When we sea trialed one other boat in Clearwater the guy kept telling my husband that he was not holding course and would crash into the sea wall and he could not figure out why the wheel was not turning his way, well my little guy Hayden was crouched down in the cockpit with him pulling the wheel the other way. Son of a son of a sailor.I'll post a pick of him on the Irwin 34 we got rid of. "Ahoy there" is his phrase of choice to people in passing at Walmart B/Seadance

Great looking kid, looks like he's going to enjoy sailing as much as you will. We just bought our first boat couple months ago, and our son is 16, the "binky" was gone a long time ago, alltho not that early, so don't sweat it ;) Sounds like you're as excited as we are, like I've said to my wife many, many, many times, I feel like a kid the night before Christmas waiting for our 1st sail. Good luck with the survey and eventual purchase. Scott H33 Sunset Chaser.
