Sharing - H22

Just thought I would share this with the group. The PO of my girl, neglected her. Basically she sat in the water unused for the past (he says) two years. I found out after getting her that the keel was broken (its ok, I did get her for a good price). I contacted Foss Foam and they made me a new one. I had her hauled out last week, and scrubbed, sanded, ground, patched, repaired, replaced, cursed, polished, waxed, and put her back in yesterday. Maintenance on her is by no way complete, just the in water stuff. The hull really came back to a nice shine after polishing and waxing.

It almost looks like you had to scrape the boat off the buildup, rather than the other way around!!

Nice looking job. Looks like we need to keep foss foam as a good resource for keels.. Would I be out of line asking what they charged for new keel.

What the heck is that horrible gate valve you have in your hand? That was a through-hull?

When you replace that use nothing but ball valves; and I recommend the Marelon ones from Forespar which are self-lubricating, lightweight and very, very strong. Oh, and also-- they don't corrode like that hunk of junk. Ever.

Yes I I replaced it with a ball valve, from Home Depot... Just kidding... Since this thru-hull is below the waterline, i replaced it with a bronze ball valve, nit Marelon. The gate valve in the picture had failed before pulling it from the boat, lucky for me, it failed closed. The handle turns but not the valve.

That valve looks like the one on my H22, Have to wonder if that is the stock valve that came on new boats. Well it doesnt look exactly like mine as mine is not corroded or froze in place thankfully.

Manufacturers often used gate valves over using proper sea cocks in older boats. The problem that often arises with gate valves is that the valve corrodes and gives way. If the other end of the hose connected to it is well above the water line, this isnt really a problem (as in this case where the it attaches to the sink, which is above the waterline). If it were to give way and be completely below the waterline, you could have a catastrophic failure (sinking). In my case, the valve had failed, but the gate was still in place, just the handle had corroded and failed. It was replaced with a proper "ball" type sea cock. I would recommend, at your next haul out, replacing it. If your boat is on a trailer, I would guess that the valve would last longer. Mine is exposed to sea water 24/7.
