Looking for person or persons to share expenses on a bareboat charter in the BVI. I would prefer to do a flotilla with Sunsail, but am open to other alternatives. I have some experience as the skipper of charters on Mono and Catamarans. Anyone looking to get away from the cold this winter?

Interesting request

Here's my take on it: Boats are pretty small places to learn to live with someone you don't know at all. Some people are wired to hang in groups and don't care to spend a minute alone with themselves. Other people cherish solitude. But friendships can be made or broken by becoming shipmates. Some folks I know and like I wouldn't want to spend a minute with on board a boat for more than a cocktail hour. There are others who I would enjoy sailing to Hawaii with.

Since no one here knows you, it may be a difficult "sell" or you may find someone who's willing to give it a try. Like e-harmony for boats, I guess. At least there you get a picture of the person...just sayin'...

Interesting request, indeed...

Good luck.

Re: Interesting request

You know, in many ways I agree with you. I've actually spent a lot of time searching for that "E-Harmony" for sailors and can only come up with one of those dating services for a fee or a free trial if you will just give them your credit card number. My desire to go sailing outways problems with the other factors. My prime concern would be to get Sunsail or other company to agree to take payment directly from the parties involved. I'm open to suggestions on how to get others involved. TheSailingClub.com is the only group that sells space to persons and, unfortunately, their Caribian trip this year is to the Abacos. Problem is that I chartered a 47' Cat their last year.

Yup, I understand. In addition to character references, now you're getting into $$ changing hands with strangers. Weird. It's like boat swapping: lotsa people ask about it, but it goes nowhere. We've done lots of house exchanges including cars, but I wouldn't let more than three or four people I know touch my boat.

So where's the picture?

In Cruising World and/or Sail magazine they sponsor group charters almost all year. There is usually a full-page ad. Any person can sign on.

Andy, Crewed charters are way to passive for my liking. I've done a couple in the past and they do little for increasing ones skills. A flotilla is about as far as I want to go in a structured experience.

Dick,

We bareboat often and rarely have a full boat. We live close enough that we could meet with you to test compatibility. If interested, contact me through this forum.
