Is the shaft on the Pearson 34-2, offset? Does this help or hinder backing. My shaft is offset but when I observer other Pearsons, they do not.

can you be a little more specific in your description...ie observing ...in the water /on the hard ...under what conditions are you referring to....backing is an art all its own ....prop walk comes into play along with having water flowing over the rudder surface...and how you manage the throttle .....short burst of power versus constant throttle....and on and on

Does an offset shaft compensate for prop walk? My mechanic removed my Yanmar this winter to rebuild it. I noticed that the shaft is offset but didn't notice it on other Pearson models in our yard. Was this a change for the 34-2 models?

any time things are not symmetrical it will cause an imbalance....there are a lot of older threads on here that would be good for you to read to better understand prop walk and its causes ....as for your model boat i don't have an answer for that maybe someone else on here can answer that ......good luck in your hunt

Vern,

I do not have the mechanical drawing for your model but the line drawings that I have show the strut attached to the skeg. That would mean that the shaft is on the center line.
If yours is offset I would be suspicious that the strut was bent by the lifting strap being over the shaft during haul out. If the mechanic offset the engine then he was trying to correct the problem by aligning the engine to the new shaft angle.

The only boats that I know of that have off set shafts are some models of Saber. They tried with some success to reduce prop walk with an off set shaft but it did not eliminate it.

I put a three blade MaxProp on my P 36-2 and it helped but did not eliminate it. Lots of practice is the best cure.
