Shaft Whine

I remember that several of you new 33 owners had a problem with a whining when in gear. Mine is between 1000-2000 RPM. I know it is in the shaft because when in neutral and sailing at 6 plus knots the shaft will spin and the whine can be heard. Has anyone fixed this problem? and how? I have contacted Hunter, but with the hurricanes they understandably are slow in response

Our whine went away with...

Our whine went away only after Hunter sent us a new propellor. That was after all kinds of other shenanigans with hauling it out, sanding the propellor that came on it, disconecting and reconnecting the drive, adjusting the drip - I can't even remember what all they and we did to try to correct it. We were actually thinking seriously about giving the boat back to Hunter. Yes, it also had the whine while sailing, with the engine not running - scared us both, thought we really had a lemon. I think ours was between 16-1800 rpms while in forward gear. And higher when we slowed down from running it faster. When Hunter finally gave up - and it took lots of nagging from us - and sent a new propellor, the whine went away. They are investigating the propellor they took off - and I can understand why - the new one looks exactly like the old one.

FYI

I have a new 33, three blade prop and 29hp engine. Hull number 172. I never experienced the whine problem though I did get a nasty vibration. Turns out all but one of the engine mounts were not even finger tight. Torqued them down and the vibration went away. I am curious what the prop config was that caused the whine? Just in case It ever shows up on my boat...

Whine and vibs solved

We had, and still do have, vibrations when the engine is off and sailing above 5 kts. To resolve this I put the throttle in reverse. It will lock in reverse until you start it again. The vibrations are just the spinning. The only whine I have is more of a harmonic at 2800 rpm, give or take 150 rpm. If I run a bit higher or lower the harminic goes away. Neither worried me as I solved them so easily.

Get a folding prop

I had the same whine. I bought a Gori folding two blade prop and the noise is gone and the boat is faster. Its worth the investment. I have been on a 33 and thought that is was a very nice boat for the price.
