When I converted from outboard back to a Betmarine diesel inboard, I rolled
my own. I ordered the shaft, coupler and prop from a company in the US
(deep blue yacht supply). I didn't know how long the shaft would need to be
once the new engine was installed, so I ordered it over length and had it
trimmed by a local machine shop once the new engine was installed. I could
also have waited for the engine installation before ordering the shaft as
well, but it would have taken an extra couple of weeks to complete the
installation. I could not source a suitable stern bearing housing for my
boat, so at the end of the day I drew up my own design that takes a
standard Johnson BACK cutless bearing (I went 1" shaft rather then 25mm)
and had a local machine shop make it for me. For the shaft seal I used a
Volvo dripless shaft seal.

Oh yeah, I used a spreadsheet to calculate the prop size I required (google
"freeware propeller calculator" and you will find it).

Here's some links to pictures to show how my setup ended up.

Hi Steve,
Looks like I will need all the stuff to reinstall an engine in my boat. I brought a new Yanmar 2YM15 complete , so I think I need everything from the trans (I guess that is what you guys are calling it) to the prop. There is a cap on the outside of the hull at the shaft that someone used to seal the hole...LOL. Oh boy. Let me know what I need to do to order the items in need. Also Steve, is there a funny picture of how all this goes together? I don't want to haul my boat into the water and have to start yelling MayDay while I am still on the hook...
Thanks,
Larry Wills

Suggest you take some photos of the engine space showing the engine bearers and the stern tube and outside the hull so we can all see what is what...

Hi Trevor,
I am trying to get a look at how this all goes together. Seeings that I have an empty hole in my boat, I am guessing about everything on engine placement, shaft type , seals, and prop. So any pictures, details or cheesebugers would be helpful.
Larry

Larry,
The Vega you acquired, did it happen to have a name? If it is the Rockport boat that I am thinking of, I might have some information for you.
And consider it could be worse, the stern tube could have been filled with epoxy.

I am thinking he changed the name. A few more questions if you don't mind, black bottom paint and a laminated cureved tiller. If it is the boat I am thinking of a friend bought it in 1985, I bought my Albin 7.9 in 1986, over the next 20 years we sailed both boats in the area. I think it was in 2004 when I helped him pull the engine after unsuccessfully trying to unseize the Volvo. It had gotten salt water in the cylinders. It was his decision to not replace the engine. Back in teh 90's he had run over a crab trap and wrapped the line around the prop shaft and sailed an entire year without using the engine. I talked him into the blanking plate for the stern tube, just in case he wanted to put an engine back in. I never liked the outboard idea. I have pictures of the boat on jackstands with the combi on blocks next to the boat. If there is something I can help you with, or are just curious, eail me and I will try to answer the questions.
