79 Hunter 30' The shaft holder or what ever you call it, on the bottom of the boat between the hull and the prop broke. Looks like it was welded before. Can anyone help me with this on what to do.

Strut....

the shaft comes out of the boat, extends and then goes through the strut that hangs from the bottom of the boat. And aft of that is the prop....about 1.5" away. You can get a replacement from a shaft/prop shop. Mine is bolted on from the inside and bedded on the exterior of the boat. I would have to move a few things, but it can be done...on some boats easier than others. Get a recommendation for a shaft/prop shop and give them a call. Good luck! Greg

Shaft saddle

It is a skeg and it supports the shaft and prop. It is probably bronze and can be rewelded. This should be done by experienced hands in a reputable yard because it must be exactly aligned with the tranny and the cutless bearing that is imbedded in the hull. Requires the shaft to be removed. In fact, the failure could have been caused by fatigue if it was not properly lined up when the old weld was done.

I thought

It was called a strut? Thats what it has been refered to to me and says so in my book. Or are we talking about different things here as I am not familiar with a 1979 Hunter 30. My last boat, a Cal 34 had the propellor right next to the stern tube with no shaft support. Greg

nysail... you are correct.

it's a strut. A skeg is a "fixed" rudder or foil, such as you'd find on a surfboard. Some crusing sailboats have a rudder attached to a fixed skeg for strength and stabiliy.
