Shaft Packing

I have used the Gore GFO Packing for several years and try and replace every two. I am due and I believe I have always used 3/16" for a 1" prop shaft which is what I believe is found on a 89 Catalina 30. When I went to order this morning the chart on the website indicated 1/4" for a 1" shaft. The boat is still covered and I broke my toe a few weeks back, so climbing into the boat is not going to be easy. I know exactly where the old package is, but will not be able to get to it until the weekend. So, is it 3/16" or 1/4"? I want to get the stuff ordered so I can launched on-time.

Packing

C30's use 3/16 packing. As stated on the All Sailors thread, every 2 years is way overkill. Mine is going on 6 years and is still perfect. Change it when you can no longer adjust it to your requirements. Mine gives about 3-4 drops a min. when running and no drops at rest. The Packing gland runs cool to the touch. fair winds Dave

Packing

Thank you for the confirmation of the 3/16". Last year at splash the packing gland was leaking quite badly. I almost had the yard pull the boat back out.The owner/operator of the yard came running over and tighnned the packing gland and the leak stopped. It did run well after that (cool to the touch, and no drips when not running). However, it is now "cranked down" pretty tight so I would rather be safe. It is one of those jobs that I hate to do; tight quarters and a lot of band-aids when done.
