I am repacking the shaft. I reviewed the archives and got the old packing out. It is 1/8 inch. Everything I read advises that the packing is 3/16 or 1/4 inch. Could the old packing be the wrong size and should I try 3/16?

The easiest way to figure it out is.....

Unscrew the packing gland nut and measure the inside diameter across the threads. Subtract the shaft diameter and then divide by 2. This gives the packing size. For my 40.5 I bought 1/4" because I was told that was the proper size but had such trouble getting it in that I finally figured out the method to measure it myself. Turned out the correct size was 3/16" and that size went in without a fight. It is had to determine the correct size from the old packing because it comes out in a mangled form and it has been compressed in use.

Notorious!

I changed mine this year and was told 3/16". Nylon box. It turned out that I needed 3/8" packing. My friend called Hunter and they insisted that it was 3/16" (Nylon box). He used 3/16", didn't feel comfortable and was there for the launching. Could have sunk his boat when water came gushing in. He went to 3/8" also. Moral of the Story: The expert isn't always right. Do it on the hard. Have 2-3 different sizes with you, Return the others!

I changed mine in the wet this year. The old packing looked like 1/8". But, it was leaking. I could not get 1/4" in. The 3/16" has kept my bilge dry for the last 7 months.

3/16 was the answer

I tried the 3/16 first and it worked great. The 1/4 inch will go back to the store. Thanks for everyone's response.
