Shaft packing replacement 25xpb

BrassRat is repowered with a 25xpb. I asked a mechanic to replace the packing. He told me there is insufficient room between the back of the transmission and the packing assembly to get to the packing. So to replace it the boat has to be out of the water and the propeller pulled.

Visually, it seems reasonable -- there's barely any space between transmission hub and the gland. Wondering if there's sufficient room in the stern tube to slide the gland back to get enough room to get to the packing comparment? (Not that I'm messing with it until the winter haulout).

Wondering if other owners have run into this?

Brass,

I had the same problem. Changing out packing was akin to putting bamboo under my fingernails.

Here's the fix man, haul your boat & get a PSS Waterless Shaft seal installed. Bite the bullet, pay once & forever have dust in your bilge.

This I say from experience. Why have green water drip into your bilge? All of this can be done by simply pulling your shaft.

I saw this problem on a Islander 32 . What I did was remove the flange to the trans. Then there was just barely enough room . Hope that will work for you .
