I just bought an 81 Hunter 30 and is on the hard. I am currently painting the bottom, new boot stripe and installing new striping tape. installing new transducers for raymarine tridata. In addition I replaced the rear transmition seal. the previous ownner let me use his specially made tools to perform this task. What a job!!...for me.this is my first diesel(Yanmar 15HP). My cockpit floor is removable but is still a bear to get down in there to work... I managed to get in there from the starboard cockpit locker. while I had the coupling apart and seperated from the shaft I repacked the stuffing box...piece of cake when you can remove that big nut from the shaft I then diligently put it all back together...I was proud of myself. the po asked me if I replaced the shaft log...No I did not. I inspected it and it seemed fine...didn't appear to be dried out or show signs of age; had four clamps...Should I repace it???

Metal or nylon?
Just replaced the nylon one on my '93 37.5. It cracked mostly due to my fault. It's a hard job, but mine was worn and I feel much better now that I have a new brass (bronze?) one. If you do replace it, call Mike Thomas at Hunter and consider ordering it there. Prices are much better than I could find anywhere else. Good luck.

Don, mine is different
Don, mine looks like a two inch black hose...about 5 inches long. I don't think it is nylon or metal. somekind of hard rubber maybe Are not these suppose to be flexable to center the shaft as it passes thru the haul. the stuffing box is attached to one end and the other is attached to the haul...am I correct?

Hose is not the log.
Tony, the shaft log is what the aft-end of the hose clamps around. It is either bronze or some sort of nylon/plastic. On my H37C it is bronze. It has a flange and is inserted from outside of the boat and bolted. You have to pull the shaft most of the way out of the boat in order to replace the log. Congrats on your work to date. You obviously have a knack. Too bad that you didn't know about the log. Maybe you don't have it all back together and can still replace it? If you do then replace the hose at the same time. And because the shaft is out consider replacing the cutless bearing and adding a flexible coupler. You will probably have to loosen and then rebed the bearing strut to get the shaft past the rudder.

There is no real reason to replace a shaft log. If it is not worn, cracked, or otherwise deteriorated leave it alone. Look for pick color on the meteal which may be a sign of elecrolosis damage and look for small cracks or worn areas where the shaft may have rubbed. if thats all good. no problem go with it. The shaft does not ride on the part is should be suspended in the middle of the opening and supported by the strut outside and the engine inside. Good luck.
