HelloI'm a very new owner of Vega 1606, it's also my first boat.When I got the boat I knew there was a problem with the prop - it's a 2-bladed flexofold. The prop sometimes gets stuck with only one of the blades out, causing a lot of vibrations/woobling. I will get the boat on land sometime next week to change the prop (it's extremely corroded).The boat is re-powered with a yanmar 1GM10.A volvo penta rubber packing box is used.The cause of my worries is the shaft log, looking at the picture:

all the yellow/pink areas are very mushy/soft. When I compress it with my finger I can see it's saturated with water.Is this normal? Should I investigate further, if so, how?Could the log be damaged due to the vibration/wobbling, risking to spring a hole?

I was under the impression that the shaft log was a bronze tube. Perhaps somebody in the past tried to wrap it with something? Either way, remove the packing box and shaft and clean it up to see just exactly what you have. From: "maciek.k.lech@... My shaft log is exposed bronze where it exits the hull, meaning it is without fiberglass wrap from the hull to the stuffing box. You could build it up with fiberglass to better fit your volvo shaft seal, but I doubt glassing it adds much strength past a few inches from the hull. If it were me, I would just keep it the way it is now. Makes it easier to inspect and keep the bilge clean. From: "maciek.k.lech@... Yes indeed, I have a bronze tube. I assume the soft goo was a mix of fiberglass with grease.I cleaned most of it up, and it the fiberglass started to flake off.But no holes, yay! Here are some pictures, both before and after the cleanup, which might make it easier to explain:

anyone else in here redone the log? Should I keep flaking off, and then re-glass? The diameter of the log is actually a bit too thin for the volvo penta rubber shaft seal, so adding 10mm while re-glassing for strength seems like a great idea.

You need to shim 4mm. A 2mm rubber bicycle tire inner tube (or similar) wrapped around and seam glued would work. In your picture link it appears the previous owner used this method. Otherwise marine-tex, epoxy/glass..etc would work to build up the area but require more work sanding and fairing. I see. How would you increase the diamater of the tube if not by glass? It's currently 38mm and needs to be 42mm, with +0.5mm -0.3mm tolerance. The person before just used a rubber band, but I snapped it while inspecting the area.If I glass will I even be able to get into that tolerance area? How easy is it to get it smooth enough?
