And things were going so well.....:cussing:... Noticed this trip that my bilge pump was kicking on every 6 minutes or so. I just installed a smaller secondary bilge pump with a siphon break as an addition to my large pump which has been cycling due to remaining water in 1 1/8 in. discharge hose draining back into bilge. Turns out I have a baby fountain welling up far, far back in the bilge. Had Wayne, local boat mech, take a look at it and here was his diagnosis; he says that my shaft log has (had) a stainless steel liner incorporated into it originally. Apparently this liner has, after 49 years, given up the ghost and water is entering along the propeller end of my shaft and steadily trickeling into my bilge. It's a small but steady 1/8 in. fountain right on top of shaft log, through a small protrusion that looks as if could have been a grease nipple at one time. Now waiting for Brunswick Landing Marina to open so I can see about scheduling a haul out . Wayne says he has fixed these before and the fix involves hauling out, cutting out the old shaft log, machining a piece of stainless pipe to proper thickness (thinness actually), installing this new liner, reglassing it into hull, then injecting epoxy from outside holes until tube is completely filled making it a solid epoxy shaft log that is good for another 50 yrs or so. I am sure I missed part of the procedure but that's it best I remember as I was dratting my luck at the time:cry:. But, as he said, better to find it now than when in Bahamas, or worse, not finding it and the situation getting much worse while underway somewhere.
Anyone repaired a problem of this nature? Thanks for your input!

Good pics Tommays. Thank you. The yard doesn't allow me to work on it. Not alot of places near here to haul a boat so I guess I am gonna have to do it their way this time. Got to get her fixed, I hate having water coming into the boat. It's especially bad as she has been such a dry boat til now. Mech says she will be good for at least another 50 yrs after the repair. Wish we all were that easy to fix! Thanks for sharing the pics.

Similar problem

I had a somewhat similar problem, a few years ago. The engine mounts had settled slightly, but enough to allow the shaft to rub on and wear the tube almost completely through, on the bottom. I found a piece of dowel the exact diameter of the inside of the log. Smeared a little bit of thickened epoxy on the worn area, wrapped the dowel in wax paper, and stuck it into the shaft log, keeping it at the top, unworn part. Then I got a piece of fiberglass tubing, 1/8 thick, that was a pretty good fit over the shaft log. Cleaned the log, smeared it liberally with thickened epoxy, and slipped the new piece of tubing down over it. Purchased a new bellows for the shaft seal that was the proper size. Problem fixed. Now has been four years, and no leaks or drips. I do now pay a little more attention to the shaft alignment.

Shaft log, alignment and cutlass bearing

I have owned Black Pearl for a year now and she has always had a vibration. It was noted in survey that cutlass bearing was due for replacement. A survey that someone else ordered who was interested in boat when I was.

Just hauled out and of course cutlass bearing rubber is gone. Decided to pull shaft to make bearing removal easier. The shaft log bottom 1/3 was gone also. Dont know how shaft tube was holding out the water.....The engine is way out of alignment. I was able to drop front end down and get it closer and will be able to raise back end to get it even closer. The motor mounts appear to be new and in good shape. I think it is a case of PO working on it with out experience. Hopefully it was not a boat yard.

I am having trouble locating the proper shaft log. In a previous post I thought I saw my log but there was not an indication of where it came from. I have the oval, two bolt, insert from outside with hose barb interior end. Thru bolted with carriage bolts....

Any ideas would be great.....Buck-Algonquin doesnt have.
