Guys,

I posted this in the Newport forum but have no replies to the following question.
So here goes:

My pal Lenny has an '84 newport 30.

We are hauling our boats for a bottom job in a few weeks.
He will change to a PSS shaft seal.

He did take measurements with calipers but is not 100% sure of the log OD. The original stuffing box hose runs all the way back & makes acurate measure tough. He did say he felt there was a reduction down in size. He mic'd the hose @ 2 1/4" OD, and thinks the log OD is 2".

I took a reading some weeks back and read the log OD as 1-7/8".
I think the reduction in size may be the mudding seal where the log exits the interior of the hull.

Can someone verify our correct dimensions.

Thanks guys,

CR

FWIW, my 1986 Newport 28 MKII log OD is 1-7/8" and has a 2-1/4" OD stuffing box hose on it. I think it is a 7 layer hose, I replaced it about 6 years ago. Engine is a Universal M-18.

If your shaft log measurements are between 17/8" and 2" order the PSS shaft seal for the smaller diameter shaft log. The bellows will easily stretch to 2". Many shaft logs are not a consistent diameter so this is a common occurrence. I had a similar situation when I installed mine and was told by the manufacturer's rep to order the smaller. The bellows will easily stretch to fit the range of sizes you are talking about.
