Does anyone use a shaft lock in neutral when left on a mooring... or when sailing.I have a Yanmar 2GMF with a three bladed prop. Any info on this would be great.
Yanmar uses what are called cone clutches in most of their tranny's and for this reason it is advised to not lock the tranny in reverse while sailing. In some cases when locking a Yanmar transmission in reverse it can cause it to jamb in gear. If this happens Yanmar advises that it is safe to start the engine in reverse then once spinning shift into neutral and problem solved.
Many marine transmissions can spin with no problems with lubricity such as many of the Hurth's and ZF's and the Kanzaki's.To be on the safe side call Yanmar tech support and give them the serial number of your tranny and they can tell you the exact procedure..
...your 3 blade is a feathering or folding prop you wont need a shaft lock of any kind and your boat will sail better with less weather helm and better speed.
We use a Shaftlok on Sea Dragon and love it... However, that was not your question... I only use it when sailing.. On the hook or at the dock I do not engage the Shaftlok.http://www.sailingseadragon.com/Shaftlok.htmAbove is the link with information on the installation and use of shaftlok on Sea Dragon.Good luckGarner
