shaft length

gretings,I have an older Johnson 9.9 with some issues. Found an evinrude 4 stroke 9.9 for about $1000 with low hours. Guy says he thinks its a 15 inch shaft. I never thought about the sahft length on mine. Other day I measured from base of engine to prop center 27" and to bottom 31". How (from where to where) is the measurement supposed to be taken? if what I got off my old one is right the 15 must be tiny!

Hi Mike. you measure shaft length from the under side of the bracket where it sits on the transom to the cavitation plate. i think most out boards are 15" 20" or 25" . here is a link to a sit with a ton of info on outboards. hope this helps. mike
