Just purchased 1990 H23 without motor. Looking to by something in the 6-8HP range with electric start and charging capability. I have not seen much discussion concerning shaft lenth 15" vs 20". 1990 H23 comes with a fixed motor mount on the port side of the sailboat. Any advice would be truly appreciated. Thanks in advance Alex

20 inch shaft is a must. Never even think about the 15 inch. One who knows the boat to well., crazy dave Condon

Cheap way is to rig up a cage with two squirrels in it turning a paddle wheel. Just a little humor. Do not put over an 8 hp for that rascal. Crazy Dave condon oeun[q09u]cf[08j=0-4i23p8v]pi

Outboard Info

Alex If you live on the east coast or close to CT, Defender is running some specials on outboards. They carry the Nissan line amongst others. If I were to replace mine, I would consider the Nissan 8 HP with electric start and alternator. True, it's a 2 stroke but it weighs only 62 lbs. A lot of motor for the $$$ and for the weight. I have Johnson 9.9 sailmaster and it is really too much motor for the Hunter 23. Whatever you chose, a 6 or 8 HP will do fine. Just get the longshaft! good luck Bob

Long shaft plus extension

For my 25' O'Day I got the long shaft plus a 4" extension added on for an extra $100. It never came out of the water no matter what in the 6 years we had the boat. Felt it was worth the extra $ and comfort knowing it would not pop out of the water at a critical time.

Long a must

I have an older Johnson 9.9 Sailmaster long shaft (20") on my 23 "Munchkin". After being on Lake Erie in many different conditions, a fifteen inch would probably been out of the water way too much! Mine has electric start and pull start and was picked up used for $500.
