Need to purchase an outboard for our 1984 25.5. We need to know what size shaft is recommended and also what HP. Our motor bracket does not have a brandname on it so I don't know how much weight it can handle either. Thanks John Gardiner
Our '86 25.5 has a 2001 Honda 9.9 with 20" shaft. It does well 99% of the time. The other 1% is when the prop sucks air when motorsailing and heeled sharply to starboard, or when in a very choppy sea.
Our Merc 7.5 long shaft (20") pulls out when it gets choppy. Other than that, its OK in our lake.If you need to handle heavy, choppy conditions, a 25" shaft might be a consideration.
This past summer I replaced an old 2 stroke 10hp on my Hunter 25.5 with a Nissan 9.9hp 4 stroke with a 25" shaft. It has worked great, plenty of power and the propeller has not yet come out of the water. The weight - - about 81 lbs., I think - - has not been an issue.
