While renewing the volvo shaft seal on my 1990 Beneteau 41S5 I couldnt get the shaft to go completely into the coupling. Lotsa banging on propshaft nut still leaves shaft 3/4 inch short of re-alinging with the countersunk bolt. Im at a loss what to do next. Tried heating- and aforementioned banging . Also drove cold chisels int slits where bolts are plus some propane torch heating. Thinking of trying to use the prop /engine force after launching to drive shaft forward but concerned that might damage keyway/key. HELP!! JUst what is the procedure here?? PS is it designed for the shaft to "bottom out" in the coupling???

Without being there, near impossible to say what's going on with the coupling. We always ask, but few seem interested enough to send photos of their problem. You've got a real SOB on your hands so photos may help, if you're interested.

Tried heating- and aforementioned banging .
I don't know if you've had experience in heating jammed components for removal, but unless it's done correctly, it's not worth the time spent on it. Many posts seen here just don't have a clue how it's done. All I'll say is, SPEED and lots of it.

Rather than me giving you a great long boring dissertation which you may already know, forward how you heated and worked the coupling and we'll see if it was done correctly.

Is the shaft or the coupling rusty? I suspect the coupling would be. Can you lightly sand iIt out?

Is the key in correctly? On my boat, the key fits better one way than the other. Maybe try swapping it around, etc.

did you put any lubrication on the shaft?

It sounds like a split coupling….is that correct? I thought those were supposed to be easier to remove periodically.

Whatever you do, don’t try to “drive it in” with the engine. Good way to tear things up,

Greg

Plus one for a split coupling if you don't have one already - though it would need to be faced to insure the surface is perpendicular, this would require removing the shaft. Split couplings go on and come off easier but there's no guarantee after a few years. When re-assembling, use Tef-Gel to help ease future removal. Also, be careful banging on the shaft, if you're pushing it up against your transmission flange you can ruin the transmission (the bearing and race are not made for it).

FIXED IT!! Appreciate your comments. Wet back this morning pulled shaft back out with a spanish windlass and 2 taps on nut.... measured and marhed everything--then helper john meticuoulsly cleaned inside of coupling and discovered key wasnt correct as nted above. used a 3/4 dowel with 320 cloth sanndpaper wrapped to clean--grease all with white lithuium aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand VOILA1 with just arm strength helper John pushed it home and we bolted coupling up -then went home and ordered new prop from geta prop.

So what you're saying is that not much is going to change if you win. The neighbours yes, but you, not so much .
Well, do t have that many friends, so there should be some left over for me:cool:

Need to get a cup of coffee and check the numbers this morning!

Well, I also bought 2 quick picks for tonight’s $110M Powerball….so, maybe tomorrow will be a winner
If you win the $110M Powerball, will you be buying up SailboatOwners just to tell the people that have pi$$ed you off over the years that they are BOTTED off the site for an indeterminate length of time.

But you and me ? We're still tight, right :p ?

With a name like Johnstone, we have be related somewhere in our distant pasts…so yes, We will still be tight:)

But I expect the same level of “tightness” if I don’t win and remain a poor old SOB.
