Hi, I need to replace my shaft and a local prop shop (Accutech in N. Hampton, NH) has advised me to go from a 25mm to a 1 inch shaft. The cost is the same wether I get the 25mm from Beneteau or a 1 inch from Accutech. My concern is the cutless and the seal between inside of boat and outside. Any thoughts appreciated. Tim

I would not do it, unless....

you also want to change not ony the cutless and the seal, but also the coupling and the prop. Of course it is easier for them not to do it in metric but you would end up without a standard Beneteau boat. I had good experience with H&H prop from Salem MA and they had no problem with metric parts.

Gotcha

Hi Jose, Yes, I understand what you are saying regarding the cutless, seal and coupler. The difference between 25mm and 1 inch is minimal. Do you think it would be a problem for cutless and seal? They are pliable. Tim

I agree with Jose

Really there is almost no difference between 1 inch and 25mm. Not many people that could tell the difference by just looking. I think the shop you are dealing with probably has 1 inch stock availabe and not 25mm. They are trying to sell you what they have, not what you need. I am almost sure the 1 inch stock would work fine, but if it was my boat I would use 25 mm stock. Also the price of the stock is just a small percentage of the cost of the total job. If you tell them you want to use 25 mm stock they should be able to get it for you. (We are talking about a piece of steel here, this is not something had to find.) If they won't make the effect to find the right steel I would look for a new shop. Good Luck. --Dan

I have to agree

with both Jose and Don. I think that you should stick with the 25mm shaft and keep everything as close to original as poosible. While the difference is minisule you don't know what the end result will be and what the long term effects of the change might cause or be

Not so minuscule, Tim

1 in is exactly 25.4 mm. That means the shaft would be almost half mm too large for the seal and cutless. Although you are correct that both are made of rubber and thus are flexible 0.4*3.14~1.3 mm of extra length is quite a bit of stretching for the seal and compression for the cutless both designed for 25 mm with no stess. My gess is that the cutless will be tight as hell initially and the seal will wear out faster than normal.

Shaft/Prop Problem Solved

Thanks for the replies! After talking to the guys at ACCUTECH we decided to stay with the 25mm shaft. They contacted Ward Richardson at Beneteau and ordered a new cutlass, seal, shaft and prop. I picked up everything but the prop which will show up in a couple weeks. When the prop comes in ACCUTECH will tune it. I have learned alot about props and shafts in the last few weeks. If you live in the North East and need prop work I HIGHLY recommend ACCUTECH. http://www.accutechmarine.com/ Thanks again, Tim
