I just did a clutch job on my 1978 H 27 with an 8 hp yanmar. The clutch was no problem but I need help on how to realigh the thing. (I also replaced one of the motor mounts). It looks like I'm about 1/2" to high but I can't be sure since the shaft is still in the rubber packing tube which flexes down so I can't tell where the center of the tube is . Is there an easy manual or book with pictures I can follow to align this thing ? I'd appreciate any help, If any one is in Huntington (Long Island) and would like to show me how I'd be happy to buy lunch... Once I see it done I'm sure that I could manage it myself. PS I'd be happy to pass along the favor..

Howard, While I've never seen a clutch on your

type of engine I think it will be the same as automotive and implement clutches. Clutches consist of a clutch driven plate (friction disc) and clutch cover (spring loaded disc cover). The disc has a hole in the center that has splines that match the splines on your transmission input shaft. The flywheel on your motor has a center bushing or bearing that fits the small smooth portion at the front of the transmission input shaft.(in front of the trans input splines) You need a clutch disc alignment tool that fits the splines of the clutch disc and also fits the flywheel center bushing. This tool is inserted inplace of the transmission shaft while the clutch cover bolts are tightened up. Without it you cannot slide the transmission into the clutch assy. No way, no how. Any auto parts store will have this tool and they are cheap. Without it you might, and I only mean "might", be able to leave the cover plate unbolted with the disc on the splines and slide the trans into place and then install the cover bolts and tighten them. Clutch cover plate bolts should be tightened in a cross-over patern and snugged up evenly in increments. Tightening one and then the next will warp the cover and ruin your clutch job. The flywheel input shaft bushing/bearing should be replaced with the disc. Be absolutly certain you install the disc in the right direction or the clutch will not release. Holler if you need more direction. Ray S/V Speedy

Job for the pro's

Howard - in my humble opinion, this is one of those jobs for the pro's. We replaced the shaft on our H31 a couple of years ago, and we never dreamed that it was a job we could tackle ourselves. Good luck!

If you can put a

clutch in, Howard, you can align the shaft. There are books out with the procedure for shaft alignment. You'll need to find the center of the shaft log by pushing the shaft to its lowest point - highest point - left and right and taking the measurements. By doing that, you'll determine the center. It is time consuming but isn't that difficult. I am sure if you can find a book with the procedure, you will be able to do it yourself. If I were closer, I would be glad to help. I am curious why you would only replace one engine mount. I know they are expensive but if one is bad the rest will surely follow. -Doug s/v BrendaGail

In the Water????

Howard, I agree with Douglas, this is something you can do. I just want to add one note. You did not mention if your boat was in the water or not. If it is not in the water, wait until it is before aigning the engine. Hull shape can change significantly enough to affect engine alignment once in the water and you will just have to do it all over again. Good Luck Kenny s/v St Somewhere, H28.5

Bad mount went like this

The mount that went bad was the one right under the engine mounted filter(I never know if it's the primary or secondary). Well every year when I change the paper filter a little fuel drops on the mount. Although I wipe it up I guess some fuel got to the rubber because it was mush. The other mounts look and feel fine. I know I'm pretty neat but I don't know about the last owner. (I've only have "My Pleasure" about 6 years) I pulled the engine and inspected them all when I did the clutch. I know that you usually replace them in pairs but the budget didn't allow it this year.
