Shaft alignment out of the water?

I,m having engine work done on My '83 Cat 30 (standard rig). The engine (Universal 25)is being lifted out and reset on the exsisting mounts...The question is can the shaft be re-aligned correctly while the boat is out of the water in the boatyard? Have heard it really should be in the water to accomodate some give in the hull..Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Align in water

Yes, the boat should be in the water to do the alignment properly. Actually, you should let the boat sit in the water for a couple of days before you start.RP

Engine mounts

You may want to put in new engine mounts while you are at it, it would be much cheaper during this process then waiting until later. You may want to check? When I purchased my 1983 C30 last year I had them replaced right after the survey, it exhibited less vibration then before. You may want to inquire about it with the yard ....also check about the cost af a dripless packing gland, I wish I would have " pushed" the idea with my yard, less hassel in the long run.have a great holiday,Jackjbolling@san.rr.com

Shaft Alignment

I am not sure that it applies so much to small boats, but as e retired marine engineer and shipbuilder I will say that final alignment was NEVER done until the vessel was afloat and in an operating ballast condition. DRACO #2301

I'll add to the previous reply that for a plastic production boat get your standing rigging tuned first. The rigging tensions fore/aft
