Here's a shot of our Hunter 26 getting ready to race off Ft. Myers Beach in SW Florida. The race was a 23 mile coastal sail to Naples, called the Summerset Regatta. Would be interested in hearing from any other H26 owners who race.

I will

I will be doing some racing in my 26. I just got it, so I haven't yet. Of course the racing I do is very low-key. I usually race with the Central Florida Yacht Club -- a sailing club for trailer sailors (see link below). It's even more low-key than I am. I too would be interested in hearing from people who have raced the 26. I don't care if I win -- I just don't want to embarrass myself. :) Michael

Please post info so we can come race next year

Is there a public ramp in the Ft Myers/Cape Coral area where I can leave my truck and trailer for a few days and not have to worry about security? I'm planning a cruise down that way this fall but I won't get far if I can't put the boat in the water. Thanks in advance. Peter H23 "Raven"

Thanks & please keep us posted

Thanks for responding! We are certainly not serious racers -- mostly out for fun. Our club, the Caloosahatchee Marching & Chowder Society (even the name says fun) sponsors numerous bouy and coastal races each year. (Below is a link to our club's web site). The Labor Day Gala is called the Summerset Regatta, and this year we had over 50 boats. The classes are mostly PHRF, including spinnaker, non-spinnaker and multihull. We also have a club class, which uses a different handicapping system, and makes it easier for "slower" boats to have some success. We usually finish last, but we do try to finish! We are the only "water-ballast" trailerable boat that races, but as I said, it's all for fun. Unfortunately in this year's Summerset regatta we dropped out due to very light winds, and then a roaring storm. Still had a great time, though. Hang in there! We added a genoa to our Hunter 26 and it's a help when the wind is above 8 - 10 kts. All in all, it's a great cruiser. Let us know how you do at the races, and any tips would be appreciated!

Boat Ramp Info

Hi Peter, We don't trailer our boat as we live on a canal. There are many boat ramps in the area. One you might try is at Salty Sam's Marina in Ft. Myers Beach (239) 463-7333. Launching here will put you very close to the gulf. I know the yard is gated and the marina facilities are great. Just don't know the policy on trailers. Keep us posted on racing. Check the previous reply for info on our club & racing.
