Shade

Its seems that it is either cold and raining, or oppressively hot, with nothing in between this year. It can be unpleasant to be anchored out in the hot sun and cabin ventilation is poor when there is little or no wind. We rigged a bed sheet as a boom tent on a recent trip and it was a huge improvement. I wontder what kind of arrangements others use to get some shade on their C22's. I am considering using either a queensized sheet with some reinforcement patches and grommets added or one of those cheap cotton tarps used by painters as a drop cloth. I also wonder about a bimini top. It would be ideal in some ways, but... It seems like it would be in the way when not in use though. Anyone care to share their experiences? Better yet has anyone got a bimini on a C22 within a half day drive of Baltimore? I would love to see such a setup first hand. ===== Pete Staehling <staehpj1@yahoo.com> Dalliance C22 #12271 Middle River Md. Pete's C22 Page at http://mywebpages.comcast.net/staehpj1

Bimini

A friend of mine has a bimini on his C-22. I love it, but it does constrict the walkway, when it is put away. They mount on either side of the cockpit, and fold forward for storage, over the companion way. I want to get one for my boat, and was thinking that if I used some quick release pins, that I could remove it for storage. Has anyone done this? David

Cockpit canopy

Last winter I made a cockpit canopy for my C-22 and this spring got to try it out: It is 400 enier royal blue nylon, waterproof. It is 8 feet long, and 7 feet wide forward, 6 feet wide aft. It has an offset velcro'd slit to fit past the backstay. I use oak baseboard material as battens (3) to suspend it. It sits on the pigtailed boom over the sailcover and ties on with a cord, the sides simply tie down with cord to the lifelines. When it is up, it gives shade and rain protection for the open hatch/or covers the little cockpit canvas poptop, and extends aft to the pushpit. I support it past the boom, aft, by using the boathook as a ridgepole. It works. It involved 50 dollars of thread and nylon, and learning how to run my wife's sewing machine. It collapses into a bag and the battens, 2-7's and a 6 foot, go aft into the Glory Hole. Sets up in about 10 minutes.

You've got to do something

Pete: You have to do something to get out of the sun. It gets too hot on the bay without some shade. Many years ago, (about 20), my wife asked me if we could do something, after we were experimenting like you are with bed sheets. I got some old tent poles from her dad that were used to screen in an area for camping, usually for dining. I cut and joined the poles, and made a nylon cover, and we have used it ever since. I just made the cover out of nylon from the fabric store. We do sail with it up, and it doesn't interfere with the mainsheet, but when you are under it, you can't see the sails as well. It does take some of the enjoyment out of sailing, but I really feel that it is necessary for sailing on the bay in the summer. Take a look at the attached link to my son's website. These photos are from last years C-22 National Cruise where we sailed from Middle River to Havre de Grace. Our cover is the one that is light teal in color, and you can see it on many of the photos. Almost all of the 22s had some type of bimini to make some shade. I did recently see that a manufacturer is offering one that only has 2 poles like mine, but most of the ones that you would find for sale usually have 3. It certainly would be worth the money to buy one, if you can't make something. As I said, I really just made mine as an experiment, and since I don't like to drill holes into my boat for experimental purposes, I made some cars that go onto the jib car aluminum tracks. I don't have mine on the boat at this minute, but will probably put it on this weekend. What marina are you at? We are planning on being on our boat this weekend. Maybe you can call us. Aldo

cockpit canopy

Last seaaon my wife and I made a canopy for our C27 which works very well. I think we got the rough plans from the Sail Rite website/catalog. We used Sailrite fabric, UV thread and fiberglass tent poles which are collapsable. Very easy to set up and take down. It took us two or three evenings to put it together.

Shaded plans

There's some plans of what you need on Catalina 22 National Sailing Association, Technical Tips, Sunshade. It looks simple enough to make although I personally haven't had the time yet to do so. Good Luck!

Bimini is good

I have a bimini on my sailboat and I like it. Yes, its true that when it is folded down the hatch hits the bimini sliding open and close. But when you are out on the water and its 90+ degrees the bimini is not in the way at all anymore. It provides shade for the whole cockpit and that makes the younger and female krewe members very happy. You could also rest the bimini on something when not in use to give the hatch clearance to slide. I also had to raise the boom a little so I could tack. If you have the means I would recommend you get one. Smooth sailing my friend, Rick
