I have a 2005 hunter 33. Over Memorial day while sailing in 15-17 knots of wind we turned up wind to to furl the sails when we were hit by a 30-35 knot wind at the leading edge of a thunder storm. The main sail started flogging then the boom started swinging back and forth from shroud to shroud. Once I was able to grab the boom I saw that the shackle that holds the main sheet blocks to the traveler had been bent out of shape and the pin had come out. This shackle looks like a stamped stainless steel shackle with a pin that goes through the shackle and then makes a 1/4 turn to lock. There is no way to mouse it or secure it in place. Don't know if it is original to the boat or not but the boats not that old so I feel it is. Has anyone else had any problems of this type? If this is standard equipment I would advise keeping an eye on this type of shackle.

dear dfast,

When the wind blows hard all kinds of things can happen, not just on your boat but any boat. replace the shackle with one that is stronger, and chalk it up to a learning experience where no one got hurt.
I've seen rigid boom vangs ripped right out of their fittings in 30 knot winds. If you're more than a fair weather sailor, you will see more in time. Don't let it get you down, and keep on sailing.
