I am looking at a couple of boats for sailing all parts of the bay year round (including the slot in summer afternoons). Also looking to venture outside the gate when conditions are good. I currently own a Lancer 28 and have been all over the bay with it. Its been fine as long as we are heading back to the estuary by the time the heavy wind hits the slot in the afternoon. The boats I am considering are Islander 30 (what is the difference between the I and the I Bahama?), the Ericson 32, and the Catalina 30. Any comments on the good and bad of these boats for Bay conditions? This boat will be a steping stone for either a Ericson 35 or Islander 36 in a few years so being able to resell easily is also a consideration. Thanks in advance for all your opinions.

Why not just go right to

I'm not sure the move from 28 to 30 is worth it, particularly if you plan to move up in a few years. But there certainly are a lot of Catalina 30s around the Bay. Easy to resell, but you pay a bit of a premium for that up front. Take a look at the slightly larger Islanders and Hunters and Catalinas (34-37). For about the same money you might find a good boat that will do even more (like a trip down to Santa Cruz). I was shopping for a Catalina 30, incidenmtally, as a Bay boat. Ended up making an offer on a 34, which did not work out, and bought a Hunter 37 cutter which turned out to be ideal. There was a nice Islander 36 for sale at Gate 8 Marina Village, my neighbor on B dock. Might take a look if it's still available. Shopping is half the fun... Good luck. Sanders

You guys are absolutely correct BUT we love our 33x12 slip and maintenance costs are not much different on a few more feet. 34 to 36 makes us wait for a new slip and costs more on the hard and every month. I also do quite a bit of single and short handed sailing. Love the Lancer 28 but want more weight and the wife would like a little more comfort. I am at the point where I will not recoop any more investment into restoring the Lancer.
