Hello all, I have never had the pleasure of servicing my winches on the boat as on my old boat, my Uncle was proud of his ability and did a fine job. However I never watched him do this . On my new boat, I have Lewmar 16ST (1), 30ST (1) and 52ST (2). I started with the 30St..downloaded the manual, disassembled, cleaned (it was a mess), greased and reassembled, easy enough. However it now seems "tight" when turning. I was wondering if I put too much grease in? The manual does not mention quantity of greese. Any hints, suggestions would be greatly appreciated as always Thanks Greg 1986 P36-2 #101

Another suggestion.

Cut a hole in the bottom of a box the size of the winch base. Sit the box over the winch and tape it to the deck. This will contain any small parts that may pop out and minimize the grease on deck.

And....

Not only will the box minimize the amount of grease on deck, it will also minimize the sickening sound of a piece plopping into the water beside the boat...

Usually the good news is that if you forget how to reassemble it, you have another one right there to figure it out. How thoughtful of them.

Actually.....

My wench actually did the service to the winch....man she would kill me if she read this one! lol And yes after I did take her to dinner with plenty of the beverage of choice, then back to the boat for the weekend retreat!

Only use oil on the pawns

Use greese on the gears, it doesn't matter if too much, but just brush it on liberally. BUT only use OIL on the pawns; if you greese the pawns, they will stick in the open position and the winch won't hold..

Try again

The winches shoudl move smooooothly. Take them apart, one at a time, clean all the grease and oil with kerosene. Apply a light coat of grease to the spindle and work into the roller bearings. Give the pawls a light squirt of spray lube (McLube) and re-assemble. We completely cleaned and lubed 10 Lewmar winches in a weekend this spring. Do to their age, we had to have delrin spacers custom made to replace the spacers that fell apart due to age and neglect.
