I wanted to thank everyone for their helpful advice. I did not have the controller with me on the trip but I hooked up the solar panels directly to the number to battery and it worked fine. The group 27 batteries were enough for the whole week , and really only needed the number to battery , has the solar panels kept it fully charged .
When I got back on tuesday I set up the Duo controller . The only question I have is in setting up towm frequency . The only choices are 25, 50 and 100 hertz. Which should I use? There is no option for direct current.

Been a couple of years since I "programmed" my duo solar charge controller. But my recollection is that the hertz setting refers to the pwm frequency. Has nothing to do with ac or dc. I also was unsure after reading the very short instruction paper. So I did call the seller ... and did reach a technical person. The answer was just leave at the default 25 for the wet lead acid batteries that we have. Not clear in the instruction, but I believe you need to multiply the 25 or 50 or 100 by 1000.

Its been a couple of years now since I got mine for my two G27's and one 20W solar panel. Never needed to add any water to my two Group 27 dual purpose deep cycles. Voltage always measures 13.6 - 13.8 during mid day when I arrive at my boat. If I use a battery for any sort of amp draw and then turn off the offending device, the Duo charger brings the voltage up to 14.x for a while then drops down the 13.6-13.6 maintenance. Seems to be doing fine.
