My settee has blocks of wood along the front edge of the settee that are spaced with about 6 inch spaces at three points. The theroy is their are also block of wedge shaped teak under the cushion that is suppossed to match up when you want to convert for sleeping. This set up will hold just about long enought to stretch out and then it comes apart. The extra coushion and the storage when not used is a pain but my wife like the idea of making it work for guest. Any idea's from the more talented wood workers out their. I prefer to spend time sailing, but I know this subject is never going to go away until I find and easy and strong fix. Thanks for any and all tips.

What I'd Do

This is actually similar to what I'm in the (way overdue) process of doing on my O'Day 25. Anyway, I'd get some stainless steel bars that span the distance between the settees. Then I'd notch out holes in the blocks for the bars to drop into (sort of like the holes for drop in fiddle rails) to serve as braces between the two setees.

Herb, then what

I've looked at it and tried to figure out how to do it without too much stuff. What will you use as a base over the bars? Ply? What about drilling holes the diameter of the rods and put the blocks inside the benches and out of the way. Earl's sound like shin knockers to me. I'm favoring a plan that comes off the port side and leaving a space to walk to starboard. Mike

Slightly Difference Scenarios

Earl's "wedges" are already there, and I got the impression he's looking to get away with doing as little modification as he can. My setup will be (soon I hope) different. I'm installing short fiddle rails along the edge of the settee's, 1/2" to 3/4" high that will hold the cusions in. They'll be 1/2" thick (I've already got them) so they'll be pretty unobtrusive (there were already shorter fiddle railes there, these will just be longer). Where the bars go, there'll be a hole in the fiddle rail to accomodate the bar, and a bigger 1/2" block under the hole to give them more strength.

settee conversion

Thanks for the idea's from both you and Herb blocks on the inside is a great idea and I have some stainless rods that will probably work. Plan to go to the boat this week-end and see how this idea measurers out. If I decide to go this method I will share some photo's of how it works. Sure beats the heck out of anything I have come up with yet and the best part is it should be easy. ( famous last words) Thanks again for the input, I new their had to be others like me working on this type of project.

Double Berth

Earl- I first got the idea on a modifaction for my Ericson 25 from Good Old Boat last September. Im a bigger guy and was tired of climbing up in the v-berth, it wasnt bad getting in, but aweful getting out. What I did was I went out and bought 4 pine boards that were at Menards. These boards were for heavy closet shelfing. i trimmed them so they fit just over the containibg board for the settes cushions. I put a layer on epoxy on the boards to protect against moisture. I then took a bike tire and cut it into pieces and stapled them onto the bottom of the boards in the spots that they sit on the containg board. This serves 2 functions, 1 is to protect the boards edge and 2 to stop from slipping. I leave the sette cushions right were they are. I bought a good quality air mattres at Sears, a Swiss Army brand with a built in air blower. It also has a felt top surface and raised pillow. I stow the boards in the head and the mattress collapses, I then put it into a old sail bag. It takes me less than 5 minutes to set up and take down. Im not sleeping on foam cushions. I love this set up, I can actually sleep in comfort.

Forgot the Support

Earl- I forgot to say that for support of the boards in the middle, I use my Igloo cooler, perfect height as for the spanning boards. I have a Full size mattres and could go up to a Queen if necessary.
