I have a 1973 Catalina 27 with what are probably the original winches. Does anyone know if the Lewmar or Harken winch maintenance kits have the correct size of pawl spings or maybe even pawls? The winches are size 8 and 16. thanks Jim

Jim, Barient winches should all be the same
as far as pawls and springs go. And the leading cause of needing parts is a lost spring so be careful when servicing them. Now that I think about it, back in those days, most pawls and springs were the same between manufactures, weren't they? Help me out here folks. *o

WM has kits
Just rebuilt my Barlow 16's on the O-day and West Marine has a prawl and spring kit Model # 164582 If you need the diagrams the C & C web site has all most all of them. Later Ed

Barient parts
A previous boat of mine had Barient winches. I think they were number single speed 10's., but not sure. I had a hard time getting the drum off one to service it and later found that a pawl spring had broken and gotten into the race. Anyway.... I had some Lewmar winch kits in my tool kit. Bingo! Both the pawls and the springs from the Lewmar kit fit the Barient nicely....

barlow winches
My '75 Catalina 27 has Barlow 8 winches. Are you sure they are Barient? Anyway, I believe you can easily get Barlow repair kits that will work fine. I know my winches were re-done before I bought the boat and they work like new.
