Service manual for Yanmar JHE - '85 H-40

I'm in the process of closing on an '85 H40. The current owner (he's the second owner) does not have an engine manual for it. I checked the Yanmar website and it doesn't respond to this legacy engine model.

I intend on calling Yanmar on Monday but was wondering if anyone here knows if there is an alternate source for one.

One of the older posts I read in my search mentioned a company named Torreson or something like that.

Any clues out there?

more specific engine numbers please...I have a pdf of the 4JH2LE manual from my P42, pretty much the same engine.

It may take Yanmar a while to respond, and it will probably be along the line of contact an authorized center for your area.

I can send you a copy just drop me a line at kd3pc at arrl dot net.

Torresen Marine is one of the larger Yanmar authorized regional centers (http://www.torresen.com/), each area of the country has one that is responsible for a part of geography to deal with. Not sure who the Tx dealer is, but TM is a Great bunch to work with.

Welcome to the dock, and enjoy!

Thanks for the replies!

L-36 had a maintenance manual for multiple Yanmar models including the 4JHE, which mine is. Part of the manual shows engine specifications which pinpoints when the engine was made & the power output, etc. I think this will meet the needs I have right now, with one exception.

The document downloads into a "window" on the L-36 website that I can view but does not seem to allow copying so I can get a paper version made to take to the boat. If you have run into this before and know how to copy it, I'd love to know how you did it. The document is 346 pages long. Once it's on my computer, I can edit out the parts that are NOT germane to my engine model.

I'm going to contact L-36 tomorrow to see if any one there can help me. I have no idea whether the site is monitored daily or not so it might be a long wait before a response, but you never know. If you do know how to extract it, please share that with me.

Thanks, Ken

Ken,

Once you open it on your computer, right click and choose "Save As". You can then save a .pdf where ever you want. After that you can print individual pages. In my case, I have also copied the service manual and everything else to my Google Drive on the cloud. Then I can access anything pretty much anywhere.

be advised, even though it is a 4jhe most ( if not all ;) ) of the 85-91 h40's had a factory exhaust modification using a slightly smaller exhaust elbow, reducing power available slightly.

search h40 on this site for details

Waternwaves,

Thanks for the info!

That was part of the information I gleaned from an earlier post by Vinny that I ran a search on. So , I'm aware of it, but thanks for mentioning it. Better to hear it twice than not at all! The power reduction was from 54 hp to 44 hp and if I recall correctly, the pipe size reduction was from 3" to 2".

Allan,

Thanks for the information! I did send an email to L-36 last night and received a reply from Allen Edwards at L-36, about 2 hours later. He advised to use the google chrome browser. I will try your suggestion first and if that doesn't work, I'll try it using chrome.

Even though I run both a PC & a Mac. My primary machine is the Mac Pro and the primary browser I use there is "Safari". I have run into some quirks with Safari particularly with not being able to play videos on some sites, but I've never experienced not being able to copy before.

I'll try using both Safari & Fire Fox and if both of those fail then I'll switch to chrome for just that evolution as a last resort. (I'm very wary of google and their data mining operations).

KD3PC,

My searching shows that your engine is the second generation of the JH model line where mine is the first. I have no doubt they are very similar. If I can capture the current file mentioned in my other replies on this thread, I'll be fine as it has notation specific to the JHE first generation engine.

Thanks for the offer to send a copy and if I'm not able to capture the copy from L-36, I'l get back to you.
