No boat Chrysler 26 Hudson FL
I will soon be selling my boat. I have a Chrysler 26 that I would think would sell between $5000 and $7000. Would it be an advantage for me and the buyer to have a survey done to set the value of my boat.

The buyer might be wise to have a Condition and Value survey performed, but there's no point in your doing it - no one would place much faith in a seller's survey. Regards, Gord

Depends

the survey will cost about $500. You know it is going to find major stuff wrong since it is an old production boat. Who is going to pay for the survey? The owner? Just reduce the price on the boat $500. More than likely there are $1000s of repairs needed on the boat. There may be water in the core, blister and problems with the keel or chain plates. Does that mean it is a bad boat, NO! It is an old production boat. The boat is a good buy as long as the deck is not soft and there are no visible blisters on the bottom.

Survey

Don't waste your time/money. Who knows the person(s) who want to buy your boat might not even want a survey. Sold my former boat, a Catalina 25, in the water, without a survey. Some buyers want them, some do not.

Surveys

The prices of used recreational boats are rarely set by surveyors. I realize that many surveys contain numbers which purport to represent "replacement values", etc., the actual prices are set by what a buyer is willing to pay. Period. I've seen some bizarre boat values contained in surveys and I assume they resulted from the owner trying to boost the actual value for insurance or other purposes. No one would pay those prices for the boat. If you are selling your boat and really don't know its value, check the ads in a newspaper or sailing publication for comparables. Go online and see what your boat is listing for on the web. Good, clean boats that are realistically priced sell fast. Good luck.

Survey!

Don, Survey will not give you a reliable value for the purposes of selling your boat. Save your money! Better source is to check Yachtworld and other sites for asking prices, then deduct 10% to 20% to estimate actual value. Good Luck! Jon

BUC

The dealers and lenders use the pay side of BUC for boat values. It is the most used and accurate.

Survey

In our area (Lake Michigan),most Insurance Companies require a Survey not more than two years old. When I bought my Hunter 35, I had it Surveyed before I bought it. That way, no Surprises.

Survey

Obewan...I agree, a survey is necessary. The buyer should set the price, and purchaser should have a prepurchase survey done, not the seller.
