Sentimental Value What's it worth?

Getting or being sentimental about a boat you do not own, is just a way to spend more (sometimes a lot more) money than necessary. Buying a less expensive boat that needs work, means working on the boat instead of sailing it. Also, it is generally accepted that anyone who buys a cheaper boat, expecting to save money, often spends more, much more, in the long run.

@rgranger: I just have to say that for many years, I've loved your signature line: "Sometimes I wonder whatever happened to all of those people who asked me for directions". And that's all I have to say about that...

Well, I decided that I would let this boat go and wait a few years to save up and buy a newer boat perhaps a 425 or 385. However I got a call from the broker telling me that the owner liked me and my story and is offering to sell it for less. . So now the boat is back on the table after I mentally said good by to it. Sunday going to take another look with the wife. .

My cynical side says the seller dropped the price because he doesn’t have another fish on the line. He figures he can jig up the fish he just lost.
But this time the fish should be followed by a shark-like surveyor, right? The OP said that the ports were leaking for years, there's a delaminated bulkhead, and needs a cabin sole. What else is the OP willing to overlook for sentiment. Lack of engine maintenance? Deck softness? Old standing rigging? Chainplate issues?

No doubt the PO doesn’t want to pay to store the boat for the winter if he doesn’t have too, and supposedly he found a replacement boat so he’s looking to move on. I’m not willing to overlook anything. I am willing to understand what it needs and what I am getting myself into. Standing Rigging needs to be replaced it’s original and way overdue. I’ll have a proper survey done to see what I have overlooked.

This is me sailing towards more financial burdens and a lot of extra labor on my end. I decided to get her after all. Wish me luck and I’ll remember you all did warn me! Perfect day to make the trip from Greenport to Huntington. Had a nice breeze and favorable tides for the first half of the trip then the wind died down.

Congrats. Sounds like you will be able to catch up on all the things that have not been done for the boat, and relive memories that have been waiting to be rediscovered.

Don’t buy that boat. It would be a costly mistake, and you stated it’s not the right time.
You’re too emotionally invested. Shop for something else that you can evaluate more objectively, but wait until the time it meshes with your other life plans.
Also, it’s very important to remember it’s currently a weak sellers market and strong buyer’s market. You might have trouble selling your current boat. How do you feel about owning 2 boats this winter, and in the coming year? Does the other boat need transport? Can you negotiate seller-paid storage and store your Capri free at your home to avoid yard fees?

Hey, she sails, that's more than a lot of "new to me" boats like that can do. Yours came with all the halyards, sheets, blocks, and rigging to sail, and no holes, with a rudder that actually turns the boat. You are way ahead of many project boat buyers.

Good luck.

How does it feel? Must have been quite the trip.

Good luck and I hope the whole family fully enjoys her.
