Self-tailing winches

HI , Chis, I had oday 23 1983 they didnot have self tailers winchers Ilooked into information and found in west marine catalog and got there blue rubber rings that go over the tops of your winchers for a pair to fit your size drum they run about $ 37.00. If you have there catalog on page 1045. Its a much better price than two new winches and they work and do a job they are called Wincher Self-Tailers I bought them when I had my 23 I am always looking to save where I can and make it work Its just a sugestion look into it. good luck Frederick Pierce.

Blue Rings
The O 23 I just bought had these rings on her, they make better teething rings for my 9 month old son than any type of self tailing device. The previous owner was very direct and told me they look nice but he could never trust them except in a "dead calm". I have tried to use them but they just don't hold at all. Save ur $$$

Check the "ask all sailors" forum
on this topic. I asked a similar question a few days ago and got some interesting responses. I found out that those who were not satisfied might not be using them properly. You must load the drum with sufficient wraps to apply pressure to the underside of the ring for them to hold. I think I'll pass anyway....Gary

Having heard both (all) sides of the debate (Thanks for the reference to your post, Gary) I don't think they are for me. I would still be interested to hear an answer to my original question. I can't imagine there are no O23's out there with self-tailers that work well. Still listening, Chris

Replace with same size and bolt pattern
All of the major brands have their proponents; you can't really go wrong with any of them. I looked into this idea myself a couple of years ago when a part broke on one of the original equipment lewmars on my '79 Oday 23. Finding a replacement part was a real hassle. However, I didn't want to spend the money to buy two new self-tailing winches, nor did I want to go through the pain of mounting the beasts. I would recommend that you see if the manufacturer of your existing winches makes an exact size (bolt number and spacing) replacement for your units. That way you can just drop the new units over the existing mounting holes. The time and energy you will save by not having to fill old mounting holes with epoxy, drill new mounting holes, cut out the inner hull liner to attach the nuts to the new bolts, etc, will more than compensate you for any marginal difference between the major brands of available winches. BTW, I am one of those who are big fans of the Winchers. They cost about $37 for a pair; if you are willing to pop for new self-tailing winches (about $1000/pair for the proper size for an Oday 23), why not give them a try before you bust the bank?

Sailors have gone for years without them
I have an Oday 25 with a 150% Geona. I do not have self tailers or the blue rings. I do however put 5 to 6 turnsaround my winches without fastening the the tails of the sheets, and have no problem with bight. The boat will round up into the wind long before it jerks 6 turns off of that winch. Put your money where you want, but on your boat self tailors are not needed. Seth Dixon Quiet Time '77 Oday 25

Mike, Thanks for the good ideas. Unfortunately I have Barient winches so getting new from the same manufacturer is not an option. Still, finding something very close is going to make the job easier. Seth, Sailors have gone for years without roller furling and A/C as well but it doesn't hurt to think about ways to make sailing more fun as we get older. I appreciate your point but the non-tailing winches drive me nuts. Of course, by the lack of responses to the original question I'm left wondering if anyone has self-tailers on an O23. Chris

friends solution
My friend is a machinist, so he make a n awfull lot of sailboat hardware at his workplace. He had the same dilema and solved it by making an adapter plate that fit bolts through the existing holes in his cabin top and 90degrees of that fit the new winches bolt pattern. He used a set of Lewmar self tailers, about the cheapest ones out there and it still ran upwards of a grand. good luck
