Wondering if it's worth the extra cash to shell out for a 2 speed winches vs a single speed self tailing winches? Have a Catalina 30 do mostly solo cruising.

Personal preference aside, your sails should be small enough to manage effectively with a single speed winch. Obviously, a two speed would be better but probably not worth the extra cash

Two speed primaries........... all the way. Trimming that genoa under load with the low gear is worth the extra bucks.... especially if you're single handing. Two speed halyard winches are handy...but may not be necessary on your thirty footer if you use a longer winch handle. For secondaries, you can use single speed standard winches.

Remember......... winches are built to last a very long time.... so the investment can be amortized over many years.... plus, the resale value of your boat will not be penalized.

If you ever want to use a drill to power the main up, make sure you get 2 speed. Milwalkee fuel m18 US$299 at HD is a brushless hammer drill with 720 in-lb torque. But no drill like to go reverse (anti-clockwise) bad for the chuck.

All single speed winch go anti-clockwise.

When you get older, a power winch is really nice for the main sail.

A friend is kicking his butt for not getting the 2 speed winch now that he saw me with a drill.

At least all Lewmar do. I recall Harken were.
Make sure you check before buy.

All winch drums turn clockwise cause more people are right handed.

I believe, by design the handle turns anti-clockwise is for normal speed due to 1 gear inside. 2 speed winch has a second gear thus the handle need to turn clockwise.
