Has anyone upgraded their #6 lewmar winches on the H260 to self tailing? If so, what was your approach to get around the small winch pad size?

WInchers

The cost put me off, too, so I bought a set of "Winchers" for 40 bucks from WM. Rubber donuts that fit on the upper lip of the Lewmar 6's. They don't have quite the utility of self-tailers, but they have never failed me by letting go a sheet. Worth giving it a shot before you drop a grand on new winches....

Do winchers really work?

I've heard mixed comments on them. They look like they would work but I was concerned that they would slip once you put them on the winch and wrapped the sheet on to them. Especially in a good blow. Thanks, Jonathan Heeling Powers

My experience...

...with Winchers has been positive, like I said. I've been out in 30 knot gusts - nearly thrown overboard by wild heeling - but the Winchers have not let go of the sheets. There's definitely mixed opinion around here as to whether they work or not - my guess is proper sizing is critical - there may also be different winch finishes to which the Winchers don't adhere to well. Who knows? It's worth a shot - if they don't work, take them back to West Marine for a refund, or a credit toward new, self-tailing winches.

winch size with winchers?

Drew What size winch did you have for the winchers on your 260?

Winch size

Actually, I have a 240, not a 260. The winches are Lewmar 6's. And now that I think about it, it may well be that the Winchers work on the 240 and not the 260 because of the increased strain delivered by the 260's larger headsail. Just a guess...
