Self tailing wenches ????

i have on my boat now some cabin top wenches that are Lemar # 7 or 8 at this time ....i am wondering if it would serve better to have say some #16 st wenches for raising the main and holding it in place as opposed to using the non st's and cleating off the halyards....other than cost is this a good choice for my use or is this just maybe over kill ...i will tell you that i do like the st's ......what are the pro's and con's of doing this...

Self-tailing halyard/control winches offer the same benefit that ST sheet winches do; they allow you to winch in line without having to tail the line. That makes it an easy one-person job with having to pretend you have three hands.

No matter what type winch you have, you should take the halyard/line out of the winch when done, let a clutch or cleat hold it.

The only down-sides are cost, and a slight increase in mechanical complexity.

Winches are the most used piece of equipment on any sailboat and for that reason alone, are the single best upgrade you could install. Plus you will appreciate the mechanical advantage more than you might expect.

But if you're ever hauled up that mast, don't rely on the self-tailing. Cleat the halyard.

Your boat is a bit larger than mine, but I don't see why you would use self-tailing for cabin top winches. Do you have self-tailing for your primary winches for genoa sheets? If not, then your money is better spent replacing those.

If you are cleating your halyards after the cabin top winches, then you are limiting the use of your winches. Better to do is add clutches ahead of the winches. That way, the winches can be used for multiple controls.

I have 4 clutches on each side, serving 4 halyards, 2 reef lines, the outhaul and vang with just 2 winches - single speed, not self tailing (but I can't think of any reason to use a tailing winch for any of these lines).

love ye woodster..had to do this....

as for winches..... have desired self tailing winches since i used em on a huge schooner of a friend....
we did belay the halyard after use..also sheets were and are also cleated...

I like Scott's suggestion, if you don't have self tailing sheet(primary) winches. I'd spend the money there, on a set of 2 speed ST 28 or 30. You can move the old standard winches to the cabin for the halyards then add rope clutches for those lines. Take the old Lewmar 7's and use them as secondary cockpit winches for spinnaker work, etc.

Heh, heh... we've taken you from a $500 upgrade to $2,000... but, hey, why not?

thanks Joe and Scott...i have #30's st and a pair of #30 non st along with the #7's on the cabin top also have a pair of the euro style 30's st single speed the aluminum style but no clutches as of yet so how would i place them and what to keep and what to get rid of .....

thanks for the advice jsg.....i have a plan for burial and disposal when i die.... a Vikings funeral just set me on the cabin top and set fire to the boat and let er drift .....

one more month after this one i think then 2 weeks then i start the tank sometime in summer....i will be here thru summer because we have named storms forming close to overhead..isnt bad here... hopefully stays that way...
will update ka lunk thread when i have more information...
