I'm looking for feeback and info on the best self tailing winches to
fit on a Vega. The Anderson 12ST's look pretty good, but I have no
experience with them.

Hey Peter...We put Harken 32's on Putachieside. As far as I'm concerned
any self tailing winch is an incredible improvement. Andersons are
expensive.

Cheers - Brian

Thanks, Brian. I see the Harken 32 is a two speed winch. I got a
local price on Anderson 12ST's (single speed) of $395 each, which I
thought was pretty good.

Mystic Rose has 4 Lewmar ST\'s - including 2 on the cabin top. I will never go back to non-ST winches. No idea how much they cost, but they work fine with lines from 3/8 through to ½ inch.

We have a set of Andersen ST12\'s on Spring Fever; they are brilliant except: -
As noted by Brian, they\'re very expensive; we got ours from a Bankruptcy Auction about five years ago, but the retail price even then was about £500+ per pair. Also the jaws on ours were too wide to get a very good grip on the 10mm sheets, so when we renewed those we increased size to 12mm.

Bob,
Thanks for the feedback on Anderson ST12 winches. So far I have heard
only good things about them.

It\'s interesting that something that costs around $500 in the
US/Canada costs £500 in Britain, yet the £ is worth about $2. I\'ve
noticed this on many things available in both areas. I guess the
ideal employment would be to work for a British company and be
stationed in North America!

I can get Andersen ST12\'s here in Canada for about $400 each, or
£200. With the world economy leveling the playing field more every
day, one would think the price of goods in the two areas would be
more on par.

Just a thought ....

Walt,
So I should buy winches here and a liferaft in the UK!
Our high dollar has sparked an orgy of buying from the US, bogging
down border crossings, and even Canada Post (from all the internet
sales.)

Lets hope the pendulum doesn't swing back too far in the opposite
direction :-(

I guess i'm revealing my age, but I can remember when the the
exchange rate was about four US to the Pound. We may get there yet
the way things are going.

I'm not so sure about the pound, but I will be glad when the dollar does a turn about, it is hovering about $1.44 to the Euro, back in Jan 2000 it was 1:1 and a few months earlier even better. If the dollar gets any worse, I am going to have to look for a new place to live. (presently in Spain) .It is killing me !!!!

Hi again Peter and everyone else.
A good source for used boat stuff is Ebay and the southeast part of the USA. What with the global warming (that isn't happening) causing more and stronger hurricanes we are also seeing a lot of salvage from wrecked boats. I once bought a Vega that had been run over by a sportfishing boat on San Francisco bay for $75.00. Made $3,000 on it and kept a lot of good stuff. Spinnaker, pole, mast, etc.
Speaking of liferafts we have a Switlik Rescue Pod. I'm not sure what it is going to look like when we get it in for the repack. It baked in the Mexican sun for too many years. If I was going to get another one I'd look hard at Revere. Looks like a lot of raft for the money. Abit over $1600 for the coastal model in a valise. Double tubes compared to single for the Rescue Pod. I don't know if it comes with an inflatable floor which I think should be mandatory for northern warters. Might be available as an option though.
One last comment on our dollars. When we cruised down the California Coast to Mexico we buddy boated with several Canadian boats. We called their dollars, dollarettes, worth about 2/3 of the USA one. To add insult to injury the banks charged them 10% to cash their travelors checks. We got around it by having them sign their checks over to us. We got full value when we deposited them to our accuont. When the banks wanted to know why we had Canadian checks we told them we had sold a Canadian our dinghy. We most have sold that dinghy 20 times! Walt
