i'm ordering a new jib and have been told that since i single hand most of the time i ought to consider adding a track for a self tacking jib. does the 23 have the deck width before the mast to allow for a track? is a self tacker a good/bad idea? any opinions on the whole matter would be appreciated.

Chris: I you are doing this from scratch look into the Camber Spar. It eliminates the track. The sail maker will insert a pocket in your sail and the insert a curved spar. The forward end of the spar rides on the forestay and the aft end attaches to a standing block on the deck just forward of your mast. We have had one of these on our H'31 for 12 years and it work great. The spar has a built in curve so you always have good sail shape. I believe that these guys advertise in Cruising World Magazine. If you cannot find them let me know and I'll try to get you a phone number. With this system the sail stays on the spar all the time. You just need to have a custom sail cover made for it like the main.

BAD IDEA

The 23 is not that big of boat, you may spend allot of $$$$$$$$ to do that and never get your money back. Cliff
