Self sailing....

How does "self sailing" work?I have heard a bit about it and as near as I can tell its a mater of attaching the main sheet to the tiller, is this correct?I am about to replace the whole main sheet rig anyway as durring some very heavy wind last weekend some of the pullys in my fiddle blocks got crushed.Cheers and thanks for any info on this!Neil

At first I thought you were speaking of "balancing the rig" which is trimming the sails and rudder so that the boat sails along by itself. But I think that you are asking about self-steering which is a wind vane linked to the tiller to steer the boat as a mechanical auto pilot. Since I only have a general knowledge of these I'll defer to someone who knows more.
