Anyone installed a knotmeter on the 216? Please give details.

never heard of it

What do you mean by seld-powered? Are you talking about the 12v power supply or the water wheel transducer? I have never seen one that didn't have both of these items.

How about using a handheld GPS

You can buy a handheld GPS for as little as $100.00, that's less then any knotmeter and better than drilling or cutting holes in the hull of a plastic boat.

Knotmeter

But...I was looking forward to using my hole saw on the hull. NOT! Good idea, I iwll ook into the GPS. ANy suggesiotns as to models that are good for sailors? To the ohter gentlemen - self powered internet search turns up a plethora of solar powered, mostly analog, knotmeters.

Handheld GPS with color display

Garmin is coming out with a color display handheld this summer, the model number is GPSmap70c. It's already listed in the West Marine catalog but they don't have them in the stores yet, at lest not here in Indiana. A friend of my went to a marine trade show this winter and saw it, he said once you see it you'll want it. They already have a tremendous amount of info down loaded in them and more memory to down load more info than any other handheld. They are a little pricey at $499.00 but the differane between color and not is striking especially in the bright daylight.

I use a magellan GPS

and it works very well. I have timed it over a known distance under power and it is generally accurate to 1/10 of a knot. Not to mention it tells you where you are and where you've been. Just remember that for speed readouts it does not correct for currents or drift, so it gives you speed relative to position change, not actual speed through the water if any currents are a factor. I use it on inland lakes so it's not a factor.

Magellan Meridian Marine

I've used this handheld GPS for 2 years. Great for the boat, lots of features. VMG being one of them. Buy the optional CD for better mapping quality. Shows all the roads and topography too. Great for hiking or just driving around in the car. Magellan makes a plastic mount designed for bicycle handlebars that works well for a pedestal guard or boat railings. It eats AA batteries, get the 12VDC adapter.

GPS model number

John, I think you mean the GPSMAP 76C? Rock, if all you need is speed, you can go with one of the lower end GPS models. There are a few in the $100 range. The lower models of the Garmin eTrex series should be just fine. I know on my eTrex Legend you can adjust display settings to make the numbers large and easy to read. combo GPS and radio?

Do people recommend getting a combo radio/GPS like the Mystic (see link) or do people recommend getting separate devices for marine radio and GPS functionality? What are the trade-offs of a wearable (watch-like) GSP device like the Garmin Foretrex 201?

combo

The Foretrex is an interesting concept, but on a boat I'd prefer mounting the GPS. On my wrist it would get too beat up and be in the way. Can't comment on combining radio and GPS, since I have no experience with those, but in general I don't like to put all my eggs in one basket. Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

SR Instruments makes a self powered unit

I have a SR Mariner KT-5A self powered knotmeter on my boat. It is an analog meter, and works completely w/o power (12V is required only if you want backlighting). SR Instruments has a web site, and Defender also carries it. Works great for boats without a voltage source.
