Hello everyone, So I decided to upgrade the instruments on my boat to a new set of all ST-60 instruments plus an ST-4000 autopilot. So I'm going to have 4 heads to put into an some type of pod. I'm sitting here looking at options and looking at all the plastic on my boat and I got this crazy idea to make a pod out of wood. I'm reasonably good with my hands and have lots of tools that don't get enought use anymore since my last project of building a pool table. Anyone ever done anything like this? If so got any pictures. Thanks Jason

no not wood!

Jason: One of the very ingenius sailors on this site used a piece of plastic fence rail to make a nav pod for some instruments. They also make end caps that allows you to finish them off nicely. Try it you'll like it and you will not need to refinish it. This method should make mounting much easier too.

Look through

The catalogs like West Marine or Defender. Get some ideas from there. I want to do the same thing and also make a nice table for my pedestal. You know, like the ones that cost over $300. *pop

Fence Rail

Steve, I guess I've not seen what you talking about. Did it look good? Maybe a trip to Home Depot is in order. Jason

Go to a fence company

Jason: Go to a fencing company. They should have scrap materials. The rails are the same size as 2 x 6 (about 5.5"), so that gives you some idea. You would need to figure out of you could drill holes to mount the instruments and then screw them onto the rail. Then you need to figure out how they will be mounted to binical. "U" brackets should work. I think that Ed Schenck did this project, but I could not find it in the Photo Forum.

Me too

I'm about to install a new chartplotter at the helm of my ODay 322, and was also thinking about crafting a homemade pod. A simple angled box that could be attached to the pedestal using rail clamps (the kind that are used for cockpit tables and the like). I just did a quick search through the Photo Forum and found this one made for a Hunter 260. It's not exactly what I had in mind for myself (I was thinking of something hinged so I could access the wiring connections more easily), but it's a start. I'll be following this thread with interest, and post up anything else I might run across. Pete s/v EmmieLou (O-322) Little Silver, NJ
