we are looking to buy a 27 catalina, with a self furling jib. we found one we really like but the self furling jib is only a 110. i was disappointed that it wasn`t a 150, is a 110 enough sail? if not has much would it cost to replace it with a larger one?

Maybe 135

I have been looking to switching over to roller furling on my C27. The sail maker recommended a 135 rather than a 150; his line of reasoning was that partially furled, the 135 was closer to a storm jib. Now this advise is for those coastal cruising the Pacific North West where gales are common in the Straights of Georgia and Juan de Fuca. He felt the 150 partial furled was to much sail in a blow.

The 150 can be a stinker in a good blow! I generally don’t use the furler for reducing sail except in a pinch, where there’s no time or it’s unsafe to change headsails. Even then, mostly I’ll roll it to no less that about a 110 and reef the main. I usually avoid that situation by changing to a smaller headsail either at the dock, or when I see heavy air coming a ways off. Later, eh! Ferg.
