Self Bailing Cockpit

I have a problem With my self bailing cockpit draining on my Catalina 22.I have clean both cockpit drains and have take the scupper valve off and cleaned, but water from cockpit will not drain out of valve.is it possible the the scupper valve is bad ,The way I understand how the valve works is water will drain out and not in. (Works as a check valve). Thanks Glenn Smith

hello glenn. there is no check valve in the cockpit drain system. when drain valve is open, the water can flow out, or in if you go under the boat and stik a garden hose up the outlet. i have had the cockpit drain hoses plugged with dirt, and i have had the outlet under the boat plugged with muddauber nests. try poking a wire up the drain outlet to clear it. john
