I am new to this forum and still figuring it out.
I am a new owner of a 1986 Javelin Sailboat, and still awaiting paperwork on the trailer so I can get NY-DMV to register it so I can get the boat to the water. Frustrating!
Subject: Self Bailer?
I understand the self bailer is supposed to have a ball in it that acts like a check valve? I inspected mine and found one of two very small retainer pins still in place and the other pin missing from it’s empty mounting hole. The ball was also missing. I don’t really want to remove the self bailer from the boat and install a new one, because it is sealed in well, and not leaking. I’d like to try to replace the ball and the missing pin. Since I have never seen the ball, I’d like to inquire about it????
What is the ball made of?
What is the size of the ball?
Does the ball float, or does it sink in water?
If it floats, what causes it to release from the hole to let the water out of the cockpit.
I suspect the answer may be the venturi effect of the moving boat, but that would require a specific speed to create a specific vacuum for it to open, therefore I would think the ball requires very specific characteristics of specific gravity.
Is there a certain specific gravity of the ball for it to work properly?
Where can I get a ball or pin? How have others solved this problem without replacing the entire self bailer.
Can anyone suggest a source of information on how others have solved this problem?
