Seldon in mast furling - backwards ?

Hi - have had trouble on the 2004 Hunter 41 mainsail furling for a while - just had a new sail made, not really much better. Two years ago we had the mast pulled and a new halyard swivel installed, didn’t help much either. Embarrassed to say I personally had not put the sail on or off since then - but with the new sail came across this (picture). Seems like the hook for the sail was installed upside down and someone put in a pad eye on the foil to shackle the sail to as a fix. Is it possible in any way this is contributing the to difficulties, including uneven and difficult furling ? Certaly you can’t really use the hook easily - the sail falls off unless you twist the heck out of the loop and over tension the halyard - I’ve just shackled to the pad eye.

Yes the casting is installed upside down. What is the U clip for? I have never seen that set up before.

Did a yard/rigger do this work?

If that is that is the bottom of the furler, and the tack of the mainsail, somebody messed thing up when they did the work.

There should be a substantial piece of stainless there that you can hook the tack of the sail down and around. Sort of elbow shaped with an extra bit.

Will try to find a picture.

Edit:
Also, from what earlier poster noted, possibly the furler was installed upside down?
